Overthrowing the Labour
Government today
It is 1 p.m. 17th March 2006 and I admit to surprise. Surprise on
two accounts – the first being the tremendous interest shown in my
article 'Yes: There was a plot to
overthrow the Labour Government'; and
the second: it would be easier to execute the same basic plan today.
At 10 a.m. during my morning coffee break, last night's BBC
documentary on the proposed plot to overthrow Wilson 's labour
government was discussed. The question muted; 'how easy would it be to
do today?' Some two hours later and after a flurry of phone calls the
answer is yes. Yes, it still could be done. If anything (subject to a
necessary figurehead) it is easier to accomplish today than in the
seventies: namely because government is more centralised and there is
an increased malaise in the UK.
Then – the question asked – who could be a figurehead? Some thirty
minutes later a source close to Thatcher indicated that he thought she
would be agreeable. The question then was should the old call to arms
be executed again via a small advert in 'Private Eye' or this time
would 'The Guardian' be a more appropriate medium.
Strange old world – to think that less than 5,000 determined men could
remove our constitutional government in less than 24 hours is a little
frightening.
